Gormley's Haulbowline Report Due

The Minister for the Environment is to present his preliminary findings on the controversial Haulbowline site in Cobh on Friday.

John Gormley will be giving his report to local county and town councillors at 11.30am on Friday morning following an inquiry into toxic waste found at the site.

However, Mr Gormley faces a tough crowd as local councillors are angry he has not met with them directly since concerns about the site first emerged.

The Minister had promised a full report into the health risks associated with the 500,000 tonnes of toxic material on the island and his plans to decontaminate the area of the deadly chromium 6 material.

Early reports suggest the report will say there is no immediate risk to the health of people living close to the site.

Before the steel plant closed in 2001, over 500,000 tonnes of hazardous waste was dumped there, before a cleaning contractor appointed last year detected the worrying levels of chromium 6.
