Road Delay Marks Start Of Traffic Worries For Years

A serious road delay on a Drogheda road is punctuating fears over announcements for major delays lasting up to five years.

A two car collision on the R152, which is the main Drogheda to Ashbourne road, approximately 3kms south of Dundalk has left the road completely blocked. Gardaí have advised motorists to avoid using the route and officers are at scene putting diversions in place. There is no report of any injuries at this stage.

However, the news comes as it is announced that over 150 Dublin Bus routes will have to be changed to make way for the construction of the Metro North light-rail system.

The Railway Procurement Agency (RPA) has said there will be wide impacts to traffic congestion with longer journey times across Dublin, as Westmoreland Street will be closed to traffic during construction for up to five years.

Last month it was reported that a fifth of St Stephen's Green will be closed to the public or four years while the underground station is being built.

The RPA have gone to an Bord Pleanála seeking planning permission from for the St Stephen's Green project on Friday. The light-rail route will connect Belinstown, North of Swords with St Stephen's Green along an 180-kilometre route and is due to open in 2013.
