€100 On The Spot Fines For Drunk And Disorderly

The Justice Minister has finally signed legislation allowing the Garda to issue on-the-spot fines to drunk revellers up to €100.

The fines have been introduced to help minimize the numbers coming to courts each day for drunken behaviour, according to the Justice Minister, Dermot Ahern.

Anyone now arrested for being drunk and disorderly in a public place can now escape a criminal conviction by paying the fine, or they have the choice of facing a €140 drunk and disorderly fine and prosecution.

Mr Ahern said: "Many would argue that if they have sufficient resources to become intoxicated to such an extent that they are causing trouble for ordinary people, then they can afford to pay the fine and it might also make them think twice before getting drunk and causing a nuisance for law abiding citizens."

The new powers were added to the Intoxicating Liquor Act, which has already provided the Gardaí with powers to seize alcohol from minors and from those drinking in public areas.
