Treaty Coverage Gave 'No' Side "More Credibility"
A conference for Ireland's professional broadcasters - looking at their coverage of the contentious Lisbon Treaty - has heard claims that they presented the 'No' camp with "less scrutiny than it deserved".
Chairman of the Independent Broadcasters of Ireland (IBI) Willie O'Reilly said broadcasters where "straight jacketed" into giving equal time to both sides of the debate, but in a way that did not deliver "balanced content".
Mr O'Reilly said: "The mere fact of a question being put to the people in a referendum does not mean that genuine balance and effective scrutiny requires both sides be given strictly equal time on air."
Mr O'Reilly went on to say that the present 50:50 rules on coverage acted as a "megaphone" to a side that may not have much merit, and instead, time should be devoted after broadcasters "deeply reflect" on the issues.
Meanwhile, speculation over a Lisbon Treaty vote re-run in Ireland is rife, and is widely seen as the most likely way through the European impasse.
However, the influential President of Luxembourg, Jean-Claude Juncker, has now said he would not advise Ireland to re-run the Lisbon treaty until 2010.
