Fine Gael Calls For Meeting Of CEOs Government
Following recent 'job slashing' announcements by several major multinational corporations, Fine Gael is now calling for a 'high-power' meeting between top CEOs and the Irish Government.
The party's Finance Spokesman, Kieran O'Donnell, has written to the Taoiseach urging him to invite the boss of Dell, along with the heads of other leading multinational companies in Ireland to an urgent meeting to listen to their concerns.
Minister O'Donnell said that, considering the serious concerns about job losses, he is very concerned over the Government's Enterprise Minister failing to formally contact Dell in light of their recent announcement they are planning to cut 25,000 jobs world wide.
The Minister said: "Thousands of jobs are under threat and this admission by Mary Coughlan smacks of neglect of the highest order.
"I have written to the Taoiseach requesting that a meeting be arranged immediately with the CEO's of all major multinational companies in Ireland - including Dell - which he would attend along with Minister for Enterprise."
In the letter, Mr O'Donnell said it was "imperative" to call the meeting. He wrote: "We are fast losing our competitive edge in Ireland. In the last two years alone we have lost 12% in international price competitiveness.
"As a Government you need to be more proactive. It is incumbent on you to take immediate action, not only with Dell, but, with other multi-national companies to ensure the future of thousands of jobs."
