Kilkenny To Lose 221 Mining Jobs

Following late night talks on Thursday, it has emerged Galmoy Mines in north Co Kilkenny is to close with the loss of 221 jobs.

Talks between the union, SIPTU, and management went on throughout the night before news broke that the company will go out of operation within two years, and the mine will close down on a phased basis from December.

A SIPTU representative in Kilkenny said the decision to close the mine was based on fuel and shipping costs. However, the representative added that the main concern now was over the price of zinc and oil prices. If zinc decreases further, and oil continues to go up, the Galway Mines might even close sooner than 2011.

The mine closure is expected to be a major blow to the local community, and is predicted to impact on the areas other businesses and local economy.
