Test Results On Galway Residents Released

Medical tests carried out on the Galway residents who had been exposed to high levels of lead from their water supply show that none have yet suffered from lead toxicity.

The tests were instigated following the finding of high levels of lead in the water supply of pre-1970s built homes in various locations in the Galway area by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Galway City Council has now agreed a programme of works to tackle the lead contamination in four areas of the city.

The news comes as welcome relief for the council after an embarrassing day on Monday when emergency water supplies delivered to the affected residents was also found to have contained dangerous levels of lead.

Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny, who visited the area yesterday, is accusing Environment Minister John Gormley of not tackling the issue with the seriousness it deserves.
