Louth Lead Levels Lamentable

Following the discovery of lead traces in drinking water in Co Galway, the water supply in parts of Co Louth is now also being examined after high levels of lead were detected in a number of samples.

Louth County Council said it was working closely with the Environmental Protection Agency and the HSE to address the matter.

The EPA informed the council on Tuesday that safe limits for lead had been breached in several samples from commercial and residential premises.

Ten separate locations in older parts of Dundalk and Drogheda, as well as in rural areas, have been identified as having unsafe levels of lead.

The EPA said on Monday that they had met with all local authorities in 2008 to review the quality of their water supplies and advise them of the EPA guidance which must be followed.

The EPA has also advised all local authorities that they must carry out lead surveys of their water distribution systems to determine the extent of lead piping in use.
