TV Series To Focus On 'Real' Dublin Gangland
As news leaks out of a plan to shoot a TV crime series based in Dublin, over on the 'real world channel' some 20 additional gardaí have been drafted into the Coolock area, specifically to quell the rising gangland tensions and feuds.
While Screentime Shinawil - which is behind the Irish version of 'The Apprentice' - is in discussion with a number of television stations about the project to bring Dublin's bloody gangland history to the small screen, a large complement of real police officers have had to be put on the beat in recent weeks following a number of violent incidents, including the murder of Anthony "Anto" Foster in broad daylight.
Coolock was also the scene for the senseless murder of innocent young mother Donna Cleary who was shot dead at a house party in 2006.
Officers are now determined to clampdown on a number of young gangs that have begun to spring up on the northside.
Tensions have been bubbling among well-armed gangs who are competing for the Coolock-Darndale drugs trade.
Meanwhile, the TV company is hoping to emulate the success of its sister company in Australia, where a fact-based crime drama won top ratings.
They said that Dublin is ripe for producing a series of hard-hitting episodes containing dramatic incidents from the city's grim crime archive.
In a further crossover from the fictional to the real world, it has also emerged that any such crime drama's weekly storyline would need to be vetted to ensure it did not prejudice any ongoing investigations.
However, problems aside the producers believe that a crime drama based in Dublin would be expected to generate a huge amount of interest from viewers throughout Ireland.
