Gardaí Hurling Star Killed In Crash
A Galway senior hurling squad member and rookie policeman who was about to finish his graduation from Templemore Gardaí College in the coming weeks has been killed in a weekend road accident.
Gardaí Paul Flynn, 24, was based with Henry Street and Mayorstone Gardaí in Limerick and died in a collision after he was returning home to Loughrea, Co Galway, in the early hours of Sunday morning after finishing a night shift with Henry Street station.
Chief Superintendent Willie Keane, Henry Street, said both he and his colleagues were shocked to learn of his untimely death.
"He was a very valued member of our staff and it came as a great shock to us all. He had his whole career ahead of him but unfortunately that was cut very short. We wish to offer our sincere condolences to all his family," said the Chief Superintendent.
Fine Gael Cllr Kevin Kiely, Chairman of the Joint Policing Committee in Limerick, also offered his sympathies to the Flynn family in Ballinakill in south Galway.
He is survived by parents Gerry and Rosemary, three brothers and two sisters.
The collision occurred shortly after 5am on October 5 at Masonbrook, Loughrea, Co. Galway. Garda Flynn was pronounced dead at the scene after the car in which he was travelling collided with a wall. There were no other occupants in the car at the time.
The deceased has been removed to Portiuncla Hospital in Ballinasloe. Anyone who may have witnessed the collision is asked to contact Loughrea Garda Station on 091-842870.
