Aer Lingus Does A Little Networking With United Airlines
Aer Lingus has brokered a deal with United Airlines to operate a codeshare agreement, according to an announcement on Wednesday.
As part of the deal, Aer Lingus customers will now be able to access United Airlines' entire extensive US network from April 2009, and customers will be able to book connecting flights with United through any of the six airports that Aer Lingus flies into in the US.
United Airlines' customers will be able to access destinations in Ireland and Europe in reciprocate.
The news comes after an announcement that recent controversial cuts by the Irish airline are being challenged by Union bosses under fresh legislation.
Siptu chiefs have announced they are to use the legislation introduced after the Irish Ferries controversy to block the 1,500 job cuts proposed on Monday.
Siptu sources said that the union was studying the potential to use, for the first time in Irish industrial relations, the Protection of Employment (Exceptional Collective Redundancies and Related Matters) legislation, which came into force last year.
The legislation allows for an independent panel to consider whether redundancies in a company are actually genuine redundancies as opposed to situations where existing workers are replaced by lower-paid staff.
Meanwhile, it has emerged that any industrial action will not have any impact on the airline's new Belfast 'hub' as staff there - who began work in January - are on different conditions than Aer Lingus staff elsewhere.
The Belfast International Airport staffing arrangments are being held up as an example of best practice by the Aer Lingus management.
