Irish Senator Apologises For Punching Colleague

A veteran Fianna Fail senator has pleaded guilty to punching a councillor in a hotel bathroom.

Senator Camillus Glynn, 67, later apologised for the assault against former Fianna Fail councillor Tom Wright in the Annebrook Hotel on Pearse Street, Mullingar, Co Westmeath, on May 25.

The court heard that Tom Wright, 60, a prominent businessman from Milltownpass, Co Westmeath, and former Fianna Fail Westmeath county councillor, had been attending a 25th wedding anniversary in a private function room in the new hotel, when he entered the men's toilets at 2.15am.

According to reports, a statement from Mr Wright, who was not present, was read out in court. It said that Camillus Glynn was washing his hands at the sink when Mr Wright walked into the bathroom. Mr Glynn then turned to Mr Wright and said "Oh, it's you Tomas," before saying in an aggressive tone, "You're talking a lot about me and my son, Ken ... I'll shut you up."

Mr Wright said the senator then punched him in the nose and stated, "That will shut you up", before running out the door.

Mr Jones told the court that a garda officer described Mr Wright as having a "swollen" and "very bloodied" face, but no medical reports were sought.

Defence counsel for Mr Glynn, stated his client "admitted the offence" and apologised to the victim, the court, gardaí, his wife and children.
