Nation Braced For Brian's Brutal Budget
Brian Lenihan's much feared budget will be revealed today, as the nation clutches its collective purse strings in preparation for the worst.
Mr Lenihan, the Minister for Finance is expected to deliver one of the most aggressive budgets in decades to deal with the wide scope of financial difficulties Ireland is facing, including international stock crashes, tax shortfalls, a domestic construction slowdown, high inflation and rising unemployment.
Among the measures expected are a 2% price hike for high earners; an airport departure tax of approximately €10; and the announcement of some major redundancies in the public service.
Mr Lenihan is also rumoured to be planning a pay-cut for the entire Cabinet following a similar move by Enda Kenny, Leader of Fine Gael.
Cigarettes, alcohol and fuel will no doubt bear some of the brunt, and there is speculation surrounding 'non-essential' subsidised services, including medical cards for over-70s, which may now be means tested along with child care payments for over 16s.
Mr Lenihan will deliver his first Budget to the Dáil at 3.45pm, later today.
