Jury Fails To Convict Or Acquit In Crash Trial

A 'hung jury' has failed to convict or acquit a man charged with causing the deaths of a garda and fireman at the scene of a road accident.

Niall Shannon, 20, from Lenamore, Ballylongford, Co Kerry, denied the charges of dangerous driving, causing the deaths of Garda Brian Kelleher, 46, and fireman Michael Liston, 47, at Barrigone, Co Limerick, in February of last year.

The jury undertook four and half hours of deliberations in the case before announcing no decision could be reached.

Should a retrial proceed, it is not expected to be heard until next year.

However, the jury did reach a unanimous guilty verdict on the charge of driving with excess alcohol.

The court heard that Niall Shannon's Audi Coupe collided with the two emergency workers while they were working at the scene of a single-vehicle accident on the N69 route.

According to reports, the lengthy case proved to be extremely trying on some witnesses, with both firemen and gardai breaking down while giving evidence.
