Drivers Warned Of Gale Force Winds

The Irish Roads Authority (RSA) has issued a warning to drivers as major gales whip through the country.

The RSA said drivers should be wary of high-sided vehicles veering across the road, and falling debris.

An RSA spokesman said: "Further to Met Eireann’s weather alert the RSA are warning motorists to be extra vigilant and have issued the following advice: Allow extra distance between you and the vehicle in front (i.e. don't tailgate), especially when driving behind heavy goods vehicles; Control of a vehicle may be affected by strong cross winds.

"High-sided vehicles and motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable to strong winds; Vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists are advised to be seen, wear bright clothing with reflective armbands, or a reflective belt or carry a torch.

The strongest winds are expected in north western and northern counties, where gusts may reach 110kph (70mph) tomorrow.
