Appeal For Witnesses To Dublin Shooting
Gardaí investigating the murder of a man in Dublin's north inner city have appealed for information from the public.
Gavin McCarthy, 21, was shot dead last night outside a fast food outlet in Sheriff Street, in what is believed to be a gang related attack.
Gardaí believe a number of people may have witnessed the killing and detectives are anxious to speak to anybody who was in the area at the time.
Gardaí believe the gunman was a teenager who escaped on a bicycle. Mr McCarthy died from multiple gunshot wounds to the head.
Fianna Fail TD Cyprian Brady has spoken out over the attack, saying the killing is only a "symptom" of the drug and gun crime ongoing in the capital.
"This is not going to stop unless we tackle the issue of drug and gun crime from all sides and adopt a common approach; from early intervention and education to justice policies and the continuous provision of targeted community resources."
"I went straight down to the Sheriff street area to speak to the local people last night and I couldn't get over the amount of young children running around the streets. It is only a matter of time before an innocent child or bystander is injured or killed in the midst of this gangland drug war."
Mr Brady added that he was concerned over a "significant rise" in drugs available on the streets, while the price is coming down due to huge competition among drug dealers to get a market and sustain it by any means.
"It is vital that Government Departments, Government agencies, voluntary organisations, community organisations and community representatives work together on a common crime prevention strategy."
