Students Arrested During Fees Protest

Three students were arrested last night at a protest staged in the grounds of a Dublin university, following proposals for the re-introduction of third-level fees.

Around 100 students took part in the action, timed to coincide with the arrival of Minister for Finance Brian Lenihan, who was to chair a function at the Clinton Institute on the Belfield campus.

The Minister was forced to enter through a side door after the protestors blocked his front door access with a staged sit-down protest outside the building.

The protestors have taken the stand against the possible return of third-level fees, and the €600 increase in annual college registration fees announced in last week's Budget.

A statement from the UCD on the possible introduction of fees said: "We in UCDSU believe that Education is a public good in itself from which everybody in society benefits. "Throughout society, free education has both sociological and economic benefits," the statement continued.

"Furthermore, keeping third level education free is about more than making it accessible to lower-income students although it is successful in that regard.

"It is a signal that we as students and citizens will not accept an artificial limit to a person's potential to learn."
