Farmers Add To Post-Budget Woes
The Irish Farmers Association has warned the Government it will not accept the cutbacks in agriculture announced in last week's Budget.
Last night, around 1,500 farmers turned out in Claremorris, Co Mayo, for the first in a series of meetings to discuss the cuts.
The IFA's president, Padraig Walshe said there was mounting anger in the farming community over the government's budgetary proposals, which he described as: "a totally unjustifiable attack on the farming sector, hitting 60,000 low income farmers hardest".
The IFA says 60,000 farmers on low incomes will be hit by reductions in Disadvantaged Areas Payments and the Suckler Welfare Scheme.
IFA president Padraig Walshe says farmers will turn out in huge numbers to let politicians know how they feel if the changes are not reversed.
Mr Walshe added that IFA's campaign would "expose the Government's outrageous and disproportionate attack on the farming community".
He said: "These cuts are unacceptable and I am determined that councillors and TDs in the Government parties will be held to account."
