Disabled Speak Out

A Donegal group representing people with disabilities has meet with Tanaiste Mary Coughlan to discuss the decision in last week's Budget to raise the age of eligibility for Disability Allowance from 16 to 18.

The Donegal group will also be represented at a meeting with Social and Family Affairs Minister Mary Hanafin in Dublin this week.

'Disability Unite' is a group which has formed in the North West to represent people with a number of disabilities in Donegal, Sligo and Leitrim.

A spokesperson was scathing last week after the threshold for receiving Disability Allowance was raised in the Budget from 16 to 18, with the loss being replaced by a reduced payment to families.

It's since emerged that the decision was partly based on recommendations from the National Federation of Voluntary Bodies, to which Disability Unite is affiliated.

However, the Federation said that one of 29 recommendations was extracted in isolation in a manner which it finds totally unacceptable, and this will be raised with Minister Hanafin.
