Man Who Stabbed Journalist Has Sentence Increased
The Court of Criminal Appeal has extended the sentence on a man who left a young journalist fighting for her life after he stabbed her through the neck.
The attack, that took place during an attempted robbery, was carried out in Dublin's Coombe area by Leszek Jarosz, 22, from Poland, and left journalist Mairéad O'Dwyer fighting for her life.
A three judge Court of Appeal described the attack as "extraordinarily savage" and extended Jarosz's sentence from seven to 10 years. The DPP had appealed that sentence on the grounds that it was unduly lenient.
Last April Jarosz, The Mill Apartments, Weaver Square, Dublin 8, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to causing serious harm to Ms O'Dwyer and to attempting to rob her on May 19, 2007.
He also admitted to robbing José Gonzalez and Luka Martinacon on the same night. At the original trial, Judge Patrick McCartan jailed him for a total of seven years.
