Tenders Returned For National Broadband Scheme
The National Broadband Scheme, which will see the extension of Ireland's broadband service throughout the country, has had tenders returned for the lucrative work.
The two bids from Eircom and Hutchinson 3G Ireland have been received following the NBS invitation to tender, with the tender winner due to be announced in the coming weeks.
Donegal Senator Brian O'Domhnaill has been campaigning for the scheme for some time and has welcomed the returns.
He said: "I have been pursuing the need to have Broadband available to all areas of Donegal with Communications Minister Eamon Ryan TD for some time. The National Broadband Scheme (NBS) will bring Government - Financed Broadband to all areas of the country that remain unserved, including Donegal."
"The funding for communications announced in Budgets 2009 will be focussed on the rollout of broadband across the country and to secondary schools also. I welcome this funding provision of almost €50million which will ensure Broadband is available in currently unserved areas which is especially important for the Regional & Rural Development of County Donegal."
Senator O'Domhnaill added that he expects to see all Ireland broad band coverage by 2012 and will be seeking the roll out of the scheme following a decision on the tenders as soon as possible.
