Government Announce Corrib Dispute Forum

The Government is set to announce the creation of a new forum in an effort to find a way through the Corrib gasline dispute.

The a new initiative is expected to be announced by Natural Resources Minister Eamon Ryan and Community Affairs Minister Eamon O Cuiv who will set up a new round of talks involving all sides in the row.

The forum, which will be headed by former senior civil servant Joe Brosnan, will be set following the failure of previous mediation efforts, as many local residents remain concerned about the project.

The scheme has been dogged by frequent protests which reached a climax in 2005 when the Rossport Five were jailed for refusing to obey a court order not to interfere with the construction of an onshore pipeline.

Shell EP Ireland, which is the lead developer in the controversial pipeline project recently said relocation of the Bellanaboy gas terminal was "not an option."

Last month, the company abandoned its plans to lay the offshore pipeline for the project but said it hoped to resume work next year.
