More Budget Protests Expected
A number of protests are expected as budget cuts are implemented throughout Ireland's public services.
Teachers and students have joined forces to oppose the recent education cuts. The Teachers Union of Ireland, the Irish Federation of University Teachers and the Union of Students in Ireland are accusing Education Minister Batt O'Keefe of deliberately targeting families who can least afford to send their children to college.
They say the decision to increase registration fees, introduce new taxes and abolish child benefit payments for over-18s will all act as a barrier to people trying to further their education.
Meanwhile, large numbers are expected to attend a protest against cutbacks in services at Letterkenny General Hospital in Co Donegal.
A demonstration has been arranged for lunchtime on Monday by unions representing doctors, nurses and administrative staff at the facility.
They say cuts in funding for vital services are already having a major impact on patient care and the indications would appear to suggest that more cuts are on the way.
