Fline Gael Call For Full-time Limerick Garda Commissioner
Following the weekend's gang murder of an innocent man in Limerick, the Fine Gael Justice Spokesman has called for a full-time Assistant Garda Commissioner to be introduced in Limerick.
TD Charlie Flanagan also called for tougher sentences to be implemented, and called for a minimum 25 year sentences for murder.
The brutal murder of Shane Geoghegan at the weekend has shocked the city and is the 17th gangland murder so far this year.
Mr Flanagan said: "The murder of Shane Geoghegan, an innocent citizen, is an outrage which has sent shockwaves through society. This callous killing shows that violent killers are trying to turn parts of Limerick into their own fiefdom, handing down their own twisted version of law and order.
"The ongoing anarchy in parts of Limerick demands a specific response from the Government. An Assistant Commissioner should be appointed to Limerick to co-ordinate Garda efforts in the city."
Mr Flanaghan added that too many murderers were getting off with short jail sentences, and quoted Department of Justice figures that show the average murder sentence between 1996 and 2006 was just 13 years.
