Dáil Plans Debate On Geoghegan Murder

A parliamentary debate on the weekend murder of rugby player Shane Geoghegan in Limerick will be held on Thursday afternoon in the Dáil.

Party leaders are expected to deliver statements with the Minister of Justice Dermot Ahern taking questions from Opposition TDs during the 90-minute session.

Over 2,500 mourners attended Shane Geoghegan's funeral yesterday, lining the streets outside yesterday’s funeral Mass in Limerick.

Fr Jim Maher said in his homily: "It is another sad reflection on the more sinister aspects of our city where this kind of violent crime leaves so much plain and sorrow, suffering and heartache in its wake."

The victim's heart-broken mother, Mary released a brief statement on the public outcry over the murder, which saw the streets of Limerick thronged with supporters.

"We deeply appreciate your thoughts, and your support is a great consolation to us all," she said.

Such is the revulsion at the murder of an innocent man by a ruthless Limerick gang, President Mary McAleese sent her condolences on behalf of the people of Ireland while the Bishop of Limerick, Dr Donal Murray, appealed for information to be given to the gardaí.
