Aer Lingus And Unions Meet For Emergency Talks

A last minute effort to avoid crippling strike action at Aer Lingus has been agreed after the National Implementation Body (NIB) stepped in to the dispute.

The NIB, which acts as a government watchdog in industrial disputes, requested to meet both sides as a matter of urgency, and talks are due to take place on Friday at 2pm at the Labour Relations Commission.

The dispute arose over Aer Lingus plans to outsource nearly 1,300 jobs in order to help achieve savings of €74 million.

However, workers union Siptu voted this week to take industrial action over the move after Aer Lingus bosses walked out of talks last week.

The new talks are expected to focus on voluntary severance and early retirement schemes to facilitate agreement form the union over the cuts.
