'Ireland Is A Very Vulnerable Country' Says Energy Expert
A leading expert on energy has warned the Irish Government that it is in a very vulnerable position and should look for alternative means of power.
Speaking in Dublin today, Chief Economist of the International Energy Agency (IEA) Fatih Birol said that the days of cheap power were over, and that there was an impending global oil shock looming.
The senior analyst advises leaders of the western world on energy supplies, and was briefing the Irish government on the IEA's latest yearly report.
The looming upcoming oil shock is a result of the countries selling oil becoming richer and more developed due to the high cost of the resource, and are growing too dependant on their own stocks to continue selling in large quantities.
The IBEC outlook is gloomier than previously expected with the equivalent of six new Saudi Arabias needed between now and 2030 to meet international demands.
"Ireland is a very vulnerable country in terms of its reliance on the international oil and gas markets," he said.
Mr Birol added that Ireland was one of the most oil dependent countries in the world – using the equivalent of 10 pints of oil for every man, woman and child every day – and had no other option but a greener future.
