Last Waltz At Blaze-Hit Dancehall
Police are probing the cause of a fire that last night destroyed former licensed premises in Donegal.
Gardaí are this morning investigating the cause of a €1.5 million blaze that destroyed the old Astoria ballroom in Bundoran overnight, which was said to be one of the country's best-known dancehalls during Ireland's showband boom.
Two firemen were treated in hospital for minor burns suffered while fighting flames, which, at one stage, leaped 30 feet into the air.
The fire started shortly before 11.20pm last night and resources from both sides of the border had to be used to tackle the fire, such was its intensity.
Fireman from Bundoran, Ballyshannon, Donegal town and Belleek in Co. Fermanagh, took several hours to bring the blaze under control.
Firefighters were still hosing the blackened and charred building this morning before gardaí forensic experts were due to carry out an examination this morning.
Daniel O'Donnell, Joe Dolan, and the leading showbands all performed in the building which first opened as a ballroom in 1954.
The overall building has been closed since 2006 though part of it was used as 'Fast Eddy's bar'.
