Haulage Boss To Step Aside After RTÉ Accusations
The President of the Irish Road Haulage Association (IRHA) has stepped down following a TV 'Prime Time' investigation into the treatment of migrant workers.
Co Louth trucker Jimmy Quinn, who was mentioned in the programme last night, has revealed he will step aside pending a libel action against the RTÉ show.
The Prime Time programme examined the conditions faced by migrant workers in a number of sectors, including haulage, where workers are alledged to have been forced to work more hours than the legal limit.
In a statement today, the IRHA said Mr Quinn was in the process of lodging a libel complaint against RTÉ and would step aside until that complaint was dealt with.
In a statement from RTÉ over the libel bid, a spokesman said: "At this point RTÉ has not received any communication from Mr Quinn and therefore cannot comment on the matter.
"Prime Time fully stands over the programme and its content."
Meanwhile, the haulage association says it plans to investigate Prime Time's accusations against three named haulage companies and has sought meetings with the Department of Transport.
Speaking about the programme, Senator Alex White of the Labour Party said: "What was revealed last night was nothing less than a systematic pattern of failure to pay even the minimum wage, provide contracts of employment, honour tax and PRSI regulations and adhere to safety standards.
"We now need far more effective action at government level to stamp these practices out and to ensure that all workers are protected from abuse and exploitation."
