More Jobs For Dole Offices

As unemployment soars, the Government has moved to create 115 extra jobs - but they are all working in the dole office.

The 115 extra staff are needed to deal with the increasing number of workers joining dole queues around the country.

The workers are being transferred from their existing civil service jobs to 48 separate social welfare offices around the country to join the 2,000 already processing social welfare claims.

Figures released this week show that their are 277,200 people signing on to claim benefits, with the unemployment rate at 7.8%.

A report from Daly's stockbrokers yesterday speculated theat the unemployment rate may rise to 10% by 2010.

Ms Hanafin said a new department, with 18 'Deciding Officers', had been established in the Townsend Street office in Dublin to tackle the backlog of claims from offices around the country.

"The extra 115 staff will be at Clerical Officer and Staff Officer levels and are being sourced from the existing Civil Service numbers both from within the Department of Social and Family Affairs and from other Government Departments," Ms Hanafin added.

Most of the offices are to get a small number of extra staff with five in Galway, Newbridge and Waterford.
