Investigation Of Gang Murder Will Be 'Long And Protracted'

The Chief Superintendent has told a policing committee that the investigation into the death of Shane Geoghegan will be "long and protracted".

The committee heard that there were nine current murder investigations ongoing in Limerick, including the inquiry into the murder of Mr Geoghegan last month.

Chief Gerry Mahon, who heads Limerick's garda force, said progress had been made in the inquiry of the 28 year-old-man who was shot dead in an apparent case of mistaken identity close to his home in Dooradoyle early last month.

Superintendent Mahon said: "I've no doubt at the end of it it's going to be a long and protracted investigation, but we are making progress. I cannot and will not discuss the type of progress, but we are making progress.

"Generally, in an overall view of the city, the major concern naturally is gangs and gang feuds and gang activities, drug dealing and possession and use of firearms. As you can see those are being addressed and in the last week we've seized five (firearms)."

He added the ongoing garda operation was targeting Limerick drug dealers, particularly those associated with the southside gang believed to be responsible for the rugby player's death.
