Lisbon Decision Postponed Until Concerns Met

The European Affairs Minister has said no date will be given for the Lisbon Treaty re-vote until the concerns that led to the rejection of the previous treaty are met.

Minister Dick Roche was speaking ahead of this weeks EU summit, said he could not set a date for the next referendum until one of the main issues at the heart of July's 'No' vote, the appointment of a permanent EU commissioner for Ireland, was resolved.

The Minister is to engage in negotiations with European officials in the coming weeks to secure the right to appoint a commissioner on a permanent basis, describing it as a "key issue".

" "It is too early to talk about a date for a new referendum. The primary aim for the Government must be to see if the fears and concerns of the Irish people as reflected in the June 12 result can be addressed," he said.

The announcement comes following a cabinet meeting on the issue, with Mr Cowen expected to seek a number of EU declarations to address some of the concerns of those who voted 'no' to the document.
