Inquiry Into Tragic Mum's Death Opens
As the inquest into the death of a new mother in hospital gets underway today, another family is coming to terms with the official settlement of damages after their baby girl died on birth in a different hospital.
The official inquest into the tragic death of Tania McCabe and one of her newborn twin sons is due to open in Ardee in Co Louth this morning.
The 34-year-old died after giving birth at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda in March 2007.
One of her twins died shortly after birth.
Her death sparked a Health Service Executive (HSE) inquiry and a subsequent report made 27 recommendations aimed at improving maternity services at the hospital.
The inquest follows a separate, unconnected case in the High Court yesterday which awarded the parents of a baby girl who died on birth at Sligo General Hospital €100,000 in compensation.
The parents of Emma Gilmartin - who died at birth on July 2nd 2005 - sued the HSE for personal injuries due to nervous shock arising from Emma's death.
The action was brought against the HSE after the baby girl was born dead due to an alleged delay in her delivery - about which no defence was filed.
Dr John O Mahony SC told the Court that the delay in delivery was due to the Hospitals failure to properly monitor the baby's heart rate.
Ms Gilmartin was admitted to Sligo General on July 2nd after going into labour, it was alleged that the hospital commenced a heart rate monitor but failed to recognise the specific trace which monitors foetal heart rate and contractions, was abnormal.
It was also claimed that proper monitoring could have resulted in the decision that the baby was delivered by caesarean section up to three hours prior to the actual delivery.
It was alleged that the hospital wrongly allowed the labour to continue and had the decision been taken earlier it was more than likely that Emma would have survived.
The parents claimed that it was entirely unacceptable that the delivery took 25 minutes when it was alleged that most competent obstetricians would complete the procedure in five minutes.
Justice John Quirke expressed his sympathy to the parents and awarded the €100,00 in compensation.
