Man Held Following Drug Seizure

A man is being held by Gardaí after a search in Dublin turned up a huge sum of the Class A drug, heroin.

Gardai at Store Street in Dublin seized the drug with an estimated street value of €100,000 following an operation carried out by the North Central Divisional Drug Unit.

The seizure was made following the search of a premises in the Benburb Street area late on Sunday night.

One man in his early 40's has been arrested in connection with the find, and a Garda spokesman has said the man is currently being detained at Store Street Garda Station under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice act.

The news comes following the release of official figures which reveal the value of drugs seized by gardaí last year exceeded €200 million. The total value of main drug types seized last year was €212.3 million, compared with €167.5 million in 2007.

It is believed last year was the first time heroin seizures passed the €40 million mark.
