Civil Servant Requests Pay Cut

A senior civil servant has written to the Finance Minister requesting a pay cut of €10,000 due to the current economic decline.

According to reports, the civil servant who requested to remain anonymous, told the Minister the gesture was in response to the cuts imposed across all Government departments in recent months “and the request to be proactive, in the national interest, in the current economic climate”.

The civil servant is believed to be at the Principle Officer level, and would be earning an estimated €88,000 to €117,000.

The Irish Times revealed the news following a Freedom of Information request.

At the time of the request, many senior government officials had agreed a similar 10% cut in their wages as the prospect of mass payroll cuts loomed in the tight budget.
