Priest Atonement Walk Reaches Final Phase

A priest, who is on a nine day walk in atonement for the clerical abuse of children, has entered the final stage of his pilgrimage.

Fr Michael Mernagh is making the journey following his calls for better protection for children from the church and atonement for the abuses against them.

Fr Marnagh began his walk from Cloyne to Dublin last Monday and is due to arrive in Dublin today.

Fr Mernagh has been involved in securing protection for children and recently called on Bishop John McGee of Cloyne to resign following a church board's finding that his dioceses's child protection practices were inadequate and sometimes dangerous.

Fr Michael Mernagh was accompanied by a dozen supporters as he left the Augustinian Retreat Centre at Orlagh in Templeogue where he trained as a priest.

The route took them through Firhouse, Ballyboden, Templeogue, Terenure and the Liberties to the Pro Cathedral, where they hope to arrive by 1.30pm. Among the walking is abuse survivor, Marie Collins.

The journey is estimated to be approximately 167 miles long.
