Government Refuses To Tackle Flynn Allowance

Governmental ministers are refusing to take action on the Independent member allowance being claimed by Fianna Fail TD, Beverley Flynn.

Ms Flynn is continuing to claim a €41,000 allowance granted to her when she was elected as an independent member even though she joined the Fianna Fail party eight months ago.

According to reports, the Finance minister Brian Lenihan can legally withdraw the allowance, but sources within his office have revealed there are no plans to do so.

Instead, the party is awaiting the return of Taoiseach Brian Cowen to deal with the scandal.

Speaking about the debacle, Labour Party TD, Joanna Tuffy said the Taoiseach "must act to ensure that the payment of the Independents allowance to Deputy Beverly Flynn ceases" and that the regulations are changed to ensure that such a situation cannot happen again.

"The Taoiseach must follow through on his promise made on RTE radio on Sunday to ‘take the matter up with her’ with firm action.

If he allows Deputy Flynn to defy him, his authority will be even further undermined. Deputy Flynn’s behaviour since the story emerged last week has incensed public opinion and is damaging the entire political system," she said.
