Embassy Holds On Attempts To Withdraw Irish From Gaza

Amid the ongoing routing of Gaza by the Israeli military, the Irish embassy is working hard to provide safe passage for Irish citizens away from the war zone.

It is believed that as many as 40 people with Irish connections are living in the territory but plans to secure their departure are currently on hold due to safety concerns.

Emergency departure passports are currently being arranged for some of those caught up in the conflict, which has been raging since 27 December.

So far, almost 700 have been killed, including almost 400 Gaza civilians, and just under 300 soldiers and policemen from the contested strip. Israel have so far recorded 11 deaths, three of which were accidents by their own force.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Micheál Martin today issued a strong condemnation of the Israeli air and artillery strikes in the Gaza strip.

He said: "I am appalled by these indiscriminate attacks by Israeli forces which has resulted in so many civilian fatalities, including of children, who were simply sheltering from the conflict taking place around them.

"The death and suffering, as well as the humanitarian deprivation, now being inflicted on the people of Gaza as a result of the continuation of the Israeli Operation Cast Lead cannot be justified in any way and must now be brought to an immediate end.”
