Ambulances Taken Off Road Due To Fire Fears
Irish ambulances have been taken off the road following a spate of incidents in which ambulances have burst into flames.
Three incidents in the last 12 months have been recorded in Ireland, and it has recently been revealed that the same model of Mercedes ambulance has incurred the same fate in Wales also.
Last month an ambulance in Co Kildare went up in flames at the K-Club, while last Monday saw an ambulance blaze in Drogheda.
No one has yet been injured by the unpredictable fires, but it is believed the possible fault only involves Mercedes Sprinter models built in 2006.
All suspect vehicles have been ordered off the road by the HSE pending an investigation. According to reports, the similar events in Wales led Mercedes-Benz into launching an urgent investigation before making modifications to the ambulances.
A spokesperson from the HSE said: "An issue with regard to a small number of vehicles, three, which recently experienced fire incidences is being jointly examined by the manufacturer's investigation team and the HSE's independent assessors as a matter of urgency."
