Cowen Talks Tough In Japan
An address by Brian Cowen on foreign policy has broadly condemned the attacks on Gaza by Israel.
The Taoiseach refused to pull his punches on the actions of other nations while making his speech during a trade mission to Japan.
Delivering the keynote foreign policy speech at the prestigious Keio University in Tokyo, the Taoiseach condemned the Israeli response to Hamas rocket attacks as disproportionate.
Over 1,000 have now died in the conflict, with the vast majority from the Gaza area, and most of these civilians.
International pressure is continuing to mount to bring the conflict to a close as a current halt of aid and essential supplies into the region is threatening to lead to a humanitarian crisis.
Mr Cowen also spoke about the war in Iraq, and how it had exposed US limitations and Washington's need for friends and partners. He added however, that he hoped the election of Barack Obama would lead to the same kind of multilateral approach that marked the Clinton years.
Later today, the Taoiseach will meet with Prime Minister Taro Aso of Japan to discuss a number of bilateral and international issues.
The talks will continue over a working dinner hosted by Prime Minister Aso at his residence.

Former Taoiseach Albert Reynolds Dies Aged 81
Former Taoiseach Albert Reynolds has died aged 81. Reynolds, born in Rooskey, Co Roscommon, served as a minister in a number of governmental departments and was elected Taoiseach on two occasions. He has been honoured as playing an integral role in the Northern Ireland peace process. His death was announced by his eldest son, Philip Reynolds.

The meetings come ahead of a crucial European Council meeting next week, and will focus on finding a solution following Ireland's rejection of the Lisbon Treaty referendum last June.

Taoiseach Brian Cowen is travelling to Sweden today to meet with Prime Minister Frerik Reinfeldt. The Taoiseach is meeting with European Union Prime Ministers and had a meeting with Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen in Helsinki yesterday.
