Costa Murder Was Rival Gang Attack
The victim of a fatal weekend shooting on Spain's Costa del Sol has been identified as a 30-year-old Irish man.
Gardaí officers - along with Spanish police - have now said they believe the drug trafficker Richard Keogh was shot by a rival drug-dealing gang.
Keogh, originally from Carnlough Road in Cabra, was gunned down outside a casino in the Costa del Sol shortly after 11.00pm on Saturday.
The shooting happened when Keogh, 30, and a father of four, was walking along the street as a gunman jumped out of a car and fired up to 10 shots at him.
The killer got back into the car, which sped off, while Keogh lay dying on the street. He was pronounced dead shortly afterwards as a full scale murder investigation swung into operation.
According to reports, Gardai were in contact with Spanish officers last night as they tried to establish the identity and nationality of the gang suspected of organising the "hit" on Keogh.
Spanish detectives investigating the killing are carrying out forensic tests on a car believed to have been used in the drive-by shooting.
The car, a dark Honda Civic, was seen speeding away from the spot where Keogh was gunned in the tourist resort of Benalmadena.
It was located several hours later, abandoned with the keys in the ignition not far from the scene.
According to local reports, another man who was with Keogh in a local ex-pat bar shortly before the shooting and who was questioned by police in their attempts to piece together the dead man's last movements was later detained after background checks revealed that a warrant had been issued by the Irish authorities for his arrest.
The unnamed man is due to appear in a Madrid court to be extradited back to Ireland. Garda have refused to confirm the reports, which have appeared in the Spanish media.
This is only the latest incident to have taken place along the Costa del Sol, with a party of Irishmen targeted in Marbella last summer in a similar shooting incident.
