Thousands of Students To Protest In Dublin
Students will be taking to Dublin streets en masse this afternoon, in protest against the possible re-introduction of third-level fees.
Announcing the demonstration, the Union of Students in Ireland says it wants to send a message to the Minister of Education, Batt O'Keffe.
A spokesman for the Union said: "The Minister for Education wants to introduce student fees of anywhere between €4,000-€8,000, and has raised the registration fee on top of this to €1,500, this will have a dramatic impact on students and families already struggling with the cost of education and making it almost impossible for many to afford college at all.
"Education is a right for all people equally. It is not just for those who can pay fees. It is a public good that benefits society as a whole. Education is our key to eventually getting out of this recession."
The spokesman added that the current economic downturn is a time for getting more people into college, not less, and that there should be greater investment in our education system.
Minister O'Keefe indicated last year that bringing back third-level fees could be on the agenda.
The protest organisers say that, weather permitting, there is an expected 20,000 students from around the country coming to march from Parnell Square to Leinster House this afternoon.
