Lenihan Pressures Banks For Small Business Credit

The Minister of Finance has said the Government is applying pressure to Irish banks to grant credit to small businesses.

The Government is also seeking assurances around the repossessions of homes and a dramatic reduction in pay and bonuses in the banking sector will also be required, Mr Lenihan said.

According to the Irish Small and Medium Sized Enterprises Association, businesses have experienced an 82% increase in layoffs, and have called on the government to outline some measures to address the "rampant" unemployment rate.

ISME Chief Executive, Mark Fielding, said: "it is absolutely essential that initiatives are immediately announced to address our lost competitiveness and in particular the business cost environment, one of the highest in the OECD.

"If we as a Country are to turn this mess around, it is imperative that the Government show decisive leadership."
