Election Spending Limited For First Time

June's local elections will be slapped with a spending cap for the first time.

Legislation announced today will mean candidates will be expected to stay within a strict budget for their campaigns.

Election campaigns will now have to spend between €9,750 and €15,00 depending on the population of their local area, with borough and town councils limited to €7,500.

The new proposals are designed to discourage a repeat of incidents such as in 2004 when up €50,000 was spent by some candidates.

Limits are already in place for Daíl elections, with a candidate only permitted to spend €30,150 in a three-seat constituency, €37,650 in a four-seat constituency and €45,200 in a five-seat constituency.

Minister Gormley today also published a report on proposals for a new electoral commission, which recommends going ahead with an independent body to take charge of the electoral register, constituency revisions, and promotion of voting.
