Man Threatens Self-Immolation At Govt Buildings

A man has been arrested after threatening to set himself on fire outside Government Buildings in Dublin.

The man is understood to have been protesting for better access to his children.

After dousing himself with petrol, the man lit a cigarette lighter and was quickly wrestled to the ground by Gardaí and firemen before being sprayed with a fire extinguisher.

Two units of the Fire Brigade, more than a dozen Gardaí and an ambulance were called when the security alert began at around 10am.

He was later taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Last July, another man was left recovering in hospital after also attempting self-immolation during a protest at an unofficial halting site in the Coolock area of north Dublin.

The incident happened during a demonstration by members of the Travelling community on Oscar Traynor Road.

A number of protestors doused themselves with petrol and one man set himself alight.

He was rushed to Beaumont hospital with second degree burns and made a full recovery.
