Fianna Fail Support Hits Record Low
Support for the governing party Fianna Fail has slumped to an unprecedented low with the party now languishing third.
A poll published today in the Irish Times shows a surge in support for Labour has driven Fianna Fáil into third place.
The figures show Fianna Fáil support has fallen by 5% to 22% well behind Fine Gael's at 32%, while and Labour has jumped by 10% to 24%.
Sinn Féin is also up 1% to 9%. After the recent high profile resignations by leading councillors in the Green party, support for the coalition members remains unchanged at 4%. Independents and other party's is down by 4% to 9%.
But one of the most startling findings by the survey, which sampled 1,000 voters in the country, showed that only 14% of those polled were satisfied with the Government's performance, with a huge 82% dissatisfied.
However, Fianna Fáil have launched a staunch defence of Taoiseach Brian Cowen today in the wake of the poll.
Fianna Fáil Chief Whip Pat Carey hit back at the opposition, claiming they were offering bland, populist alternatives to revive the economy.
“The results of the polls aren’t flattering to us and we make no secret of that. If our legacy as a government is that we have corrected the difficulties in the Irish finances in the context of the global downturn, then I think we can stand with our heads held high,” said Mr Carey.
