Raiders Held Family At Gunpoint
Armed raiders have left a family "deeply traumatised" in a vicious robbery in Galway.
During the incident, a couple and three of their four children were tied up and held at gunpoint at their home last night.
A gang of up to five men armed with a shotgun, a hatchet and other weapons, burst into the house in Lackagh in Turloughmore, about 15km from Galway city, just before 9.00pm last night.
The man, his wife and their four young children aged between one and seven, were in their home when the raiders forced their way in.
The family were restrained with cable ties as the thieves searched the home for cash and valuables.
Two female neighbours who arrived at the house a short time later were also overpowered and tied up.
Gardaí say they became aware of the incident about 15 minutes into the attack and two uniformed gardaí went to the scene.
Following a struggle one of the five raiders was arrested in the house; a second was taken into custody a short distance away and a third, who sustained injuries, was taken to hospital in Galway and is under garda observation.
One garda was struck with a hatchet during the incident but was not seriously injured.
A search is continuing for two other gang members, who stole a small amount of cash.
The businessman and his family were not injured in the raid but are said to be "deeply traumatised".
The scene at their house has been preserved for technical examination later today.
