Public Alert Gardaí To Arms Cache
Gardaí have uncovered a number of firearms following a crucial tip-off.
Shortly before 6pm yesterday evening, three firearms believed to be handguns were recovered in the Inniscarra area of County Cork.
A Garda spokesman said a member of the public had alerted Gardaí to the find.
The firearms are currently in possession of Gardaí at Ballincollig and will be taken to Garda Headquarters for examination. The matter is presently under investigation.
In other news, two men are to appear in court this morning charged in connection with an armed raid at the home of a businessman in Co Galway on Sunday night.
During the incident the man, his wife and three of their four children were tied up.
Gardaí believe two other members of the armed gang are still at large, and believed to be from Dublin. The men escaped from the violent break-in at the home of Julian Flynn in the village of Lackagh, some 10 miles north of Galway city.
Two women neighbours who arrived at the house while the raid was taking place were also tied up.
A member of the family managed to raise the alarm just after the raiders struck and two local gardai arrived at the house within minutes and confronted the gang.
Three members of the gang were apprehended shortly after the raid, one of whom is still in hospital under Garda surveillance where he is being treated for leg injuries sustained during the break-in.
The family and two neighbours were not hurt in the raid but were badly traumatised. The two arrested men will appear before Galway District Court this morning at 10.30am.
