SIPTU Dublin Bus workers plan all-out strike
The trade union for Dublin bus drivers has announced major strike action for the city next month.
SIPTU said today the bus drivers it represents will be on an all-out strike from 1 March if management continues with its cost-cutting measures.
The union made the decision after its members voted in favour of the action last week.
A spokesman for the union said: "SIPTU has not been afforded any opportunity by Dublin Bus management to address the proposals and to protect employment conditions for bus drivers."
In a statement Dublin Bus said it has not yet received official notification of any industrial action by the drivers' unions.
Calling the action "regrettable", the company said it was open to discussions to try to resolve the matter before 1 March.
SIPTU bus drivers, and other grades of employees in Dublin Bus affected by the company's cost cutting plans, will be participating in large numbers at the ICTU Demonstration on Saturday, February 21, 2009 at 2.00pm in Parnell Square, Dublin.
Paschal Donohoe, Fine Gael Senator for Transport & Marine, said "passengers will pay the biggest price" and blamed the government's planning for the strike action.
"An indefinite bus strike will bring Dublin to a standstill and cause chaos across the city. Thousands of commuters who currently use buses will be forced back into their cars. The net result will be gridlock and commuter misery. It will cost millions of euros to businesses and job losses in the middle of the worst recession for a generation," the senator said.
