Metro Scheme Won't Be 'Buried'

Plans for a new 18km metro line serving north Dublin are set for dicsussion at Croke Park this afternoon.

But fears that the recession might bury the costly scheme appear unfounded as Metro North - which would be mainly underground - is now expected to cost much less than the expected €4.6bn.

It could be significantly less expensive because of a fall of up to 20% in construction costs.

The scheme is planned as a link between Swords and St Stephen's Green in the city centre.

Today's hearing has been arranged to discuss the Railway Procurement Agency's draft railway order for the scheme.

More than 300 submissions have been made to An Bord Pleanala in relation to the project, most of which are broadly in favour.

However, there are concerns about the environmental impact during the construction phase, while the Mater and Rotunda hospitals have expressed concern about how drilling could affect sensitive medical equipment.

There has been much speculation that the Metro plans could be shelved because of the recession, but the RPA said today that infrastructure investment should continue despite the downturn.
